Cathryn Falwell is a real favorite in our house. She is the author of one of my previous reviews, Mystery Vine, and also of Turtle Splash which is currently holding the "most read" position in our house. The boys ask for this book each day during story time and it is such a good read with beautiful illustrations that I am happy to oblige.
The story begins with "Ten timid turtles, lounging in a line. Startled by a bullfrog...then there are nine". From there you read through the remaining nine turtles, one by one, moving from their log after being disturbed by different wildlife (deer, butterfly etc...). Each page provides a clue in the illustrations about what will move the next turtle from his spot on the log and my guys never tire of trying to spot the clue. The turtles all meet again at the bottom of the pond to "settle for the night". This is a wonderful bedtime story and the words just have such a great flow....it is a really great "read aloud" book. The illustrations are fantastic and all the animals depicted are so life like. The final portion of the book contains fun facts about the wildlife included in the story as well as instructions for a leaf print craft.
As I mentioned, we are big fans of Cathryn Falwell's books which is why I am beyond thrilled to announce my latest giveaway! Ms. Falwell has graciously agreed to provide a signed copy of Turtle Splash to one lucky winner. So, not only is Cathryn Falwell a very talented author but she is also super nice...what a combo! I was not familiar with this author, but the cover illustrations are gorgeous! I bet my younger son would like it. I'll have to get some of her books from the library. Thanks for the suggestion!

I love to read myself, and hope to pass on that love to my children. I read to them every night as well as any other opportunity I get.
I love cuddling with my kids when we read, it's such a special time we share and the boys always look forward to it before bed.

My boys love to read! I really love when the 4 year old "reads" to his little brother.
What a great sounding book. I must admit I'm not familiar with the title. My son LOVED the turtles at the New England Aquarium so much that he couldn't stop saying "tootle" for weeks. It's almost worth another trip to Boston!

Our family recently took our first trip to the zoo, and are working on learning about and identifying all types of animals- this book would be perfect!

Story books are food for the soul and for the imagination. I was an active volunteer at a school for the underprivileged children who had no access to story books. (Currently owing to various reasons, I am only able to donate books) Story books helped instill in them a love for reading, but more important storytelling was a time when the volunteers or teachers could really bond with them. They could relate to characters in the books and talk about their own fears or their own dreams.
I grew up on books. I hope all children in this world will have access to story books some day.
