Ah-Choo Review & Giveaway...

I know we are all still enjoying the last bits of summer and I do hate to be a buzz kill but what happens after summer?  Yes, yes, the kiddos get back to school.  What about after that?   COLD SEASON!  Yup, once our little angels hit the books they also start sharing the germ love with all their friends thus bringing home colds.  I know that even with my kids home with me I have still had my share of colds...no fun!  I was thrilled when Hachette Book Group sent me the book Ah-Choo by Jennifer Ackerman.  Jennifer Ackerman shares everything you ever wanted to know about the common cold.  Here is more....

Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In AH-CHOO!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it's really possible to "fight one off." Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They've also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed. In this ode to the odious cold, Ackerman sifts through the chatter about treatments-what works, what doesn't, and what can't hurt. She dispels myths, such as susceptibility to colds reflects a weakened immune system. And she tracks current research, including work at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, a world-renowned center of cold research studies, where the search for a cure continues.

I found this book to be extremely interesting and, hopefully, handy when the first cold of the year strikes.  For example, did you know empathy can actually shorten a colds length by an entire day!  Try and remember that the next time your significant other is acting like a child when he/she has a cold!  Arm yourself with Ah-Choo before cold season strikes...

When I was pregnant, I lived on echinacea. It is the only time I will say that echinacea actually helped me. I was unable to take all the OTC medicines. So this helped. It didn't take it away, but it did improve my immune system at a time when I didn't really have one.

My worst cold story is from last year. I got H1N1 (swine flu) and it nearly killed me. I was in bed for 12 days with a fever. It got to 104 for three of the days and I ended up in the hospital on oxygen for a while. It was miserable. Luckily my kids and husband didn't get sick and I eventually recovered.

I remember one time I had a horrible sinus infection and had to blow my nose constantly. We had a band concert that night and I was playing on the stage and ran out of tissues. It was a runny gooey mess!

Embarrassing, but I have a cold, and I'm sitting at my computer right now with a Puffs stuffed up each nostril--I'm tired of my nose running, then stopping what I'm doing to go blow my nose and wash my hands.

I rarely get sick. In fact, the last time I had a sick day was when I was pregnant and sent home from work over 7 years ago. Knock on wood. When the kids get sick, I make them chicken noodle soup. ....Tiffypoot @ (aol.com)

Two pre-schoolers throwing up, and daddy is away from town for work. Thank God for good friends! My childless friend showed up and babysat them in the tub (where we decided it was easiest for them to be, for easy cleaning up afterwards) while I cleaned up the trow up outside and changed sheets.
