The Law of the Garbage Truck by David J. Pollay....Review & Giveaway

I just finished a book that changed me.  I know...you are thinking I am being a bit dramatic but I am serious.  The Law of the Garbage Truck by David J. Pollay has me thinking about how I treat people and how they treat me and that can only make for good things right?  Let's get back to the name...The Law of the Garbage Truck.  Maybe we should start with a bit about where the book title came from...

Twenty years ago, while riding in a New York City taxi, syndicated columnist and business consultant David J. Pollay narrowly escaped a life-threatening car crash. The driver who almost caused the accident started yelling at the cab driver, who remarkably just smiled, waved, and wished him well. Pollay asked how the cabbie could remain so calm, and his response sparked the defining principle of The Law of the Garbage Truck:

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. . . . And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. So when someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally . . . move on.

Pretty remarkable, right?  It struck a chord with me right away.  How often do I take on someone else's "garbage"?  How often do I dump my own "garbage" on others?!  Someone give this cabbie a big high-five!  Pollay took this one moment from his life and used it to change the way he lived.  Isn't is amazing how one moment can be so meaningful?  Pollay also used this philosophy to help improve the lives of others.  In The Law of the Garbage Truck, Pollay helps you to...

• Avoid getting dumped on by rude, thoughtless, and angry people
• Stop reliving the negative in your past, and fearing the future
• Focus on what you can control, not the negative things you can’t
• Reduce incivility wherever you find it, and stop bullies in their tracks
• Improve your relationships by not dumping on your friends, parents, spouse, or coworkers
• Find happiness again after dealing with illness, loss, and personal tragedy
• Increase productivity, respect, and cooperation by creating a No Garbage Trucks! Zone in your business, school, and home
• Gain the courage to enjoy every day, do what you love, and make a difference

Sound great doesn't it?  Well, it really is.  The book also gives you an "action guide" at the end of each chapter which helps you to better achieve a "No Garbage Trucks!" life.  There are also two quizzes to help you determine how much garbage you are taking in AND putting out.  It was pretty life altering to look inward like that.

Obviously, I have not turned into Mother Theresa overnight.  Sometimes I will curse (under my breath of course!) at the slow driver in front of me.  But for the most part, I am going to try to be the person who smiles at the grouchy sales clerk and lets that harried person in the grocery line go ahead of me.  What if we all tried Pollay's way of life?  Wouldn't that be a wonderful world to live in?  Let's all run around with pins like this...

Read the book.  Take the pledge.  Let's rid the world of all the garbage shall we?  You can pick up a copy of this life changer on Amazon...

What struck me the most was "if you let them, other people will dump their garbage on you." I always thought that being a nice person meant that you let people "express themselves." I had no idea that I had a choice about getting dumped on. I can't wait to read more and use my power to make it stop. WOO HOO!

I really liked your review on this book. It sounds excellent. I read on the website about #6, gratitude. I think that is so important. It's easy to forget how good we have things and to be thankful for them.

I was really affected by the post on gratitude chains. We all seem to forget how much effort goes into the tiniest luxury or act of kindness.

I love the ideas of Cultivating memory. We can only appreciate those that we remember, so that we need to include them in our thoughts and prayers. I have a feeling this is one of those books that you buy extra copies to pass onto friends!

This made me think:
You feel grateful only for what you remember. Practice recalling the most important people and things you care about in your life. Recite them in the morning. Add them to your prayers. Reflect on them each day. Thank them.

"Unfortunately, most of us are unaware of the many good chains in our lives." I know that I am guilty of focusing on the negative instead of the positive. We all should try to focus more on what's good. It's better to live life that way.
