The people of Sesame Street are releasing a brand new 12 part series titled Shalom Sesame. Shalom Sesame was created to "help bring the vitality of Jewish culture and tradition as well as the diversity of Israeli life to American children and their families, each 30-minute, live-action and animated DVD will focus on story lines drawn from Jewish cultural traditions, highlighting lessons on Hebrew letters and words, unique sites in Israel, and Jewish values". I was really excited to review the first two installments (just released on October 5th!) Welcome to Israel and Chanukah: The Missing Menorah. Here is a bit about the latest from Sesame Street Workshop...
“Welcome to Israel” Synopsis:
Grover and Anneliese go to Israel! Join your favorite blue monster and his new pal as they begin to explore this beautiful land. It’s an adventure they’ll never forget - full of fun, friends and flying falafel! Guest appearance by Christina Applegate.
“Chanukah: The Missing Menorah” Synopsis:
It’s time to celebrate Chanukah in Israel! Grover’s bringing the latkes and all is well until Anneliese gets caught in a game of tag with a chicken and loses her special menorah …just as Chanukah is about to begin! Can her friends find the missing menorah in time? Guest appearance by Debi Mazar.
Both titles are in the same style you would expect from Sesame. There are the bits on letters but they are Hebrew letters. There is The Count but he does his counting in Hebrew. So, all the things that make Sesame interesting and educational are the same but now you can add learning about a new culture as well. I really enjoyed the first installments of Shalom Sesame Street. I thought they were a fabulous way to teach young children about different cultures and places. I think this program is appropriate for all children...Jewish or not. The boys and I are already looking forward to upcoming titles! You can purchase Welcome to Israel and Chanukah: The Missing Menorah from Amazon...
