Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched The World...Giveaway

There is a touching book out that I am really excited to tell you about, Dewey:  The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched The World by Vicki Myron with Brett Witter.  This book combines two things most people love...books and animals.  Read on....

How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.

As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.

How cute is this cat's name...Dewey Readmore Books??  Adorable!  I can't wait to read this heartwarming true story!  I think we could all use an uplifting story wouldn't you agree?   This is going on my reading list and on my gift list for animal and book lovers alike!  You can purchase your own copy on Amazon..

Hard Candy Review...

I recently had the opportunity to test out some makeup from a super fun company....Hard Candy.  Hard Candy is a makeup company who has a slew of fun and trendy make up products.  I couldn't wait to snazz myself up a bit!

The first product I tested out was the Visibly Wet-Glossy Lip Pencil.  LOVE this one.  You know how lip pencil is usually dry?  Well this chubby pencil glides right on and keeps that wet look without being over the top glossy. I am the kind of girl who at least puts a little lipstick on when I leave the house and this lip pencil makes it quick and easy.  This one is a keeper!

Next I tested out the Just Nails Nail Polish.  The company claimed this polish was long lasting and it certainly lived up tot the claim!  I put this on my toes a week ago and it still shows no sign of chipping....yay for low maintenance.  Another plus is this polish is free of the "yucky" stuff like DBP and formaldehyde.

Lastly, I put the Take Me Out Liner  to the test.  I don't usually wear much for eye makeup so I am a bit of a novice here but Take Me Out eyeliner went on smooth and not overly heavily which was nice.  A little goes a long way with me and I was happy you could easily control the look with this liner.  Take Me Out Liner is creamy going on and does not smudge or run easily.   Something fun about these funky eyeliners is that they can double as hair styling sticks....fun and multi-purpose!

The overall verdict?  Hard Candy is incredibly reasonably priced so you can glam up with the new trends without breaking the bank.  There are a ton of shades and formulas to choose from so there is something for everyone.  Hard Candy wins points from me for fun factor and for being easy on the purse strings! For all the latest news and styles from Hard Candy follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Pin It

CSN Stores...

I am really, really excited about this company I am going to be doing a review for soon....CSN.  Have you heard of them?  Well, if you haven't, let me be the first to fill you in on CSN the company that has everything.  Really...they have EVERYTHING.  They have 200 stores.  200!!  You can find stores dedicated to Toys & Games, Shoes, Luggage....if you need it they have it!

So, when given the decision to choose something for a review I was overwhelmed.  CSN just has so many amazing things to choose from.  I finally narrowed it down to the kitchen.  My kitchen needs some serious love when it comes to accessories.  Now to narrow it down further.  The dutch ovens would certainly come in handy but then again so would some new wine glasses.  I could seriously go on and on about what I wanted from this store (it is a staggering list!) but I will tell you what I finally decided to review...
Yup, this mom is getting a new hand mixer from Cuisinart and I couldn't be happier!  My hand mixer broke recently (after 11 years!) and with all the baking the kids and I do I really need a snazzy new mixer.

Stay tuned for my review on my new mixer.....what will I bake first?!!  Meanwhile treat yourself to something nice and visit CSN Stores....you deserve it!

What Not To Say: Tools for Talking With Young Children by Sarah MacLaughlin...Review & Giveaway

I just finished what has to be one of the most helpful guides for raising young children...What Not to Say:  Tools for Talking With Young Children by Sarah MacLaughlin.  What Not To Say is a compilation of 66 common expressions to avoid using and why they don't work.  The author does not only tell you what NOT to do she gives you tips on what could potentially work better.

What Not To Say is geared toward parents or caregivers with children aged 1-6.  As the mother to twin 4 year olds, I can appreciate the challenges of this age group.  This age group is wonderfully interesting and funny but can also be stubborn and reactive...my boys are certainly the toughest bosses I have ever had!  I could not wait to crack into this book!

Right away I recognized many of the common expressions listed as either something I have said or have heard another parent say to their child.  For instance how about the old stand by "Because I said so"?  This one doesn't really work does it, but we all know someone who has said or we ourselves have uttered it.  MacLaughlin explains that by using this we dismiss our child's feelings and close the lines of communication.  Sure, the steady fire of questions from a pre-schooler can be a bit draining at times but isn't it far more satisfying (for them and us!) to answer their questions rather than cut them off?  What about "There's nothing to be afraid of?".  Of course there are things in the world to be afraid of...aren't we all afraid of something (BEARS!!)??  Instead of dismissing our child's fears we should address them and find a way to navigate them.

Those are just two of the expressions addressed in this book but each and every one gave me pause and made me think about what I say to the kids and how I say it.  What Not To Say is broken up into easy to navigate sections and many of the common expressions include book suggestions for your child to help drive positive points home and address any tough times they may be going through.

What Not To Say earns huge points from me and I happily recommend this book for anyone with young children.  This book really helps you to understand you child, understand how your words can affect him//her and give you pointers on how to make more meaningful connections.  I think we all want our interactions with your children to be joyful ones and Sarah MacLaughlin gives some solid tips for helping you to do that.  A must read!

Thinksmart Family Review & Giveaway...

I remember video games when I was younger.  Atari anyone?  I am probably dating myself there but Atari was where it was at and you played mindless games.   Now video gaming is so much more.  In our home we have a Wii and we enjoy bowling, golfing and even hula hooping all from our Wii console....video games have come a long way baby!

On top of the fun physical and other arcade type games you can also challenge your brain.  The newest offering from Thinksmart is Thinksmart:  Family.  In this game (available for Wii and Nintendo DS) you can play puzzle type games to challenge your mind and body.  Here are some of the key features...
  • Over 8,000 exercises for well toned minds and bodies.
  • Individualized coaches who motivate, track progress, and establish a "THINK" quotient to show improvement!
  • Customizable avatars, each of which gains access to the "Think Institute" to create a custom, daily plan.
  • Up to 16 players can compete in multi-player rivalries, with modes like Tournament, Competition, and Endurance.
  • 7 different categories: language comprehension, math, memory, logical and three-dimensional reasoning, readiness of mind and physical fitness.
This is NOT Q-Bert or Pac-Man people!  This game really does work your brain and it will bring out your competitive streak!  This game is rated "E" for everyone but I do want to point out that, in my opinion, the games are too challenging for younger children.  I think this game is most appropriate for adults and older (preteen and up) children.  However, my oldest children are 4 so maybe kids start learning more complex puzzles earlier in which case I am sorry to say I am probably NOT smarter than a 5th grader!

I am still a fan of good, old mindless fun...there is a definite place for that in my life.  I also see tremendous value in using video game consoles for other aspects as well such as physical fitness and mind puzzles.  Thinksmart Family is an excellent choice to challenge your brain (and your friends and family!) with fun puzzles and mind games.   Amazon is running a huge special on Thinksmart for Wii right now....only $19.99!!  You can also click here to find a retailer near you.

Guess what readers?  Thinksmart is giving one lucky RBM reader a copy of ThinkSmart:  Family in your choice of Wii or Nintendo DS version.  Thanks Thinksmart!  Here is how to enter...

Mandatory Entry: Tell me who you would most like to challenge to a game of ThinkSmart:  Family.  You must complete this entry for all extras to be counted.

Uncommon Designs = FABULOUS!

Did you all notice the shirt I was wearing in the Yo Gabba Gabba post?  I know it is hard to get past the fact that I am standing next to DJ LANCE but seriously, the shirt I am wearing is gorgeous.

The very talented ladies of Uncommon Designs made me this beautiful shirt and it is just perfect for Fall.  It is the most beautiful mixture of fall colors and just so stylish!  I love how it hits (just at the hip bone) and the cut is perfect and SO flattering.  I also love the detail of the tie at the neck which I think gives it that extra something.  I probably never would have thought to pair the flowered pattern of the top with the orange polka dots of the trim but it is fabulous!  The ladies of Uncommon Designs have an eye for design there is no question about that.  When I look at their things I think of Boden only better!  I can't tell you how many compliments I have already received on this shirt...too many to count!

Their fabulous tunic shirts are only the beginning of their trendy and beautifully, handmade products.  Check out this necklace I am eyeing...
How spectacular is that??  They even have fun and fashionable things for your home like this pumpkin towel...
You can visit Uncommon Designs at their Etsy Shop to see the full range of products they have to offer (don't miss the Halloween things!!).  You should also be sure to visit their blog to keep aware of all their new, creative ideas and products.

You all know I love handmade...there is just something about being able to say "this is handmade and  one of a kind" don't you think?  I especially love Uncommon Designs.  Their products are fun, fashionable and affordable.  Be sure to stop by their blog and Etsy shop and say hello!

Yo Gabba Gabba Had a Party in my City...

I know I told you all how excited I was about going to see Yo Gabba Gabba Live with A&W so of course I could not wait to tell you all about it after the show!

Early on in the week we told the boys that we were taking them on a date but would not tell them where we were going.  They had some guesses...apple picking, McDonald's, Olive Garden were just a few but they never did guess what we were really doing.  On the night of the show we left Baby R with Nana so Mommy and Daddy could have date night with their boys.  When we arrived at the Merrill Auditorium there were posters of Yo Gabba Gabba in the lobby and souvenirs featuring the characters but it took a minute or two for it all to sink in.  The boys then realized we were seeing Yo Gabba Gabba but at that point they thought we were there to watch the usual show on the big screen which still had them super excited!  While in the lobby we were approached by one of the Yo Gabba Gabba team who asked if we would like to attend the special after party with the Yo Gabba Gabba crew....YES!!  We got special bracelets to attend the party which only added to the excitement.  I couldn't believe our good luck!

Once inside we found our seats which were awesome and waited for the show to begin.   The kids were even given DJ Lance Glasses to wear.  When the lights dimmed and the music came on the looks on the boys faces were just of amazement.  When DJ Lance came walking onto the stage it just about blew their minds.  He was REAL and he was HERE!   Priceless.  The show was so fun and energetic and, quite frankly, might have been my favorite concert ever (sorry U2 and Billy Joel).  DJ Lance &Co. had the kids up dancing to favorite songs (Don't Be Afraid, Party in my Tummy), Biz did some beat box, at one point hundreds of balloons fell from the ceiling, not to mention confetti and bubbles.  It was amazing.  The kids had a blast and so did my husband and I.  From the looks of it every kid there was having the time of his or her life and the parents were way into it too!

When the show ended we got to go to the after party for more fun.  What an experience.  We were there with about 40 others and there was Yo Gabba Gabba decorations, drinks, munchies and the entire cast!!  The boys were so cute and and were especially excited to meet DJ Lance who was so nice.  Alex and Will were impressed that he could lift them both up and were beyond tickled that he gave them an autographed picture. I will be honest, my husband and I were pretty excited to have pictures taken too and have pretty much sent copies to everyone we know!  After some photos and meeting the gang we listened to Biz do some beat box with the kids...so funny!  The four of us headed home happy with an amazing date night.  I knew the kids would have a great time but I had no idea how excited they would be.  I was so grateful that the boys (and me and my husband!) got this experience.   A&W are still completely in awe that they got to meet their favorite characters and that they are "real".  You really don't want to miss this show if you can help it!  You can find a party near you here.  If you don't have a child of your own bring a friend's because this show is that fun!!

I couldn't resist sharing a photo of us with the DJ Lance (um....do we look a little excited??). ....

BabyLegs Review & Giveaway...

I love baby clothes don't you?  Something about all that itty bitty cute stuff that melts your heart. Some of my current favorites in the baby/children clothing category comes from BabyLegs.  Have you seen the adorable offering from BabyLegs before?  Let me just give you a little sampling...
How adorable are these leg warmers??  I could have just gone completely bananas uploading pictures of these in all the fun styles but I tried to show some restraint.  BabyLegs leg warmers are a must have for Baby R these days.  It is getting colder here so I love to slide them over tights or leggings to keep her little legs warm while adding some fun to her outfits.  Here is Baby R sporting some super cute lady bug leg warmers the other day...

These leg warmers are such a great idea.  They not only work as the obvious (leg warmers=keep legs warm!) but they are great for potty training as your baby gets older, they protect soft knees from the friction of crawling and they are the perfect way to add some punch to your child's outfit.  There are so many styles to choose from...polka dots, stripes, holiday.  You name it they have it!  Right now I am oohing and ahhing over the fun Halloween styles

BabyLegs not only makes their great leg warmers but they also have girl tights and socks as well.  The styles in these products are equally as cute and I have decided that a child can never have enough leg warmers and socks!  Baby R has these socks and they are absolutely adorable...

The quality of all BabyLegs products is amazing and even after washing Baby R's lady bug warmers at least 5 times they look brand new.  The sizes start at newborn and run right up to 4T.

I am a huge fan of BabyLegs and think every baby should have at least a few pairs of the leg warmers and a whole stash of the tights and socks.  The designs are adorable, the prices affordable (the leg warmers are only $12!)  and they are very well made.  You can't go wrong with these!  You can find BabyLegs at boutiques, Target and on the Babylegs website.

DEAL ALERT:  Reviewed By Mom readers get a special discount!  Between now and October 23rd enter REVIEWMOM at checkout and receive 20% off your entire order.  Stock up!!

I am so excited to tell you that BabyLegs is giving one Reviewed By Mom reader a BabyLegs prize pack!  For boys this is 2 pairs of the leg warmers and 2 pairs of socks and for girls this is 2 pairs of leg warmers, a pair of socks and a pair of tights.  Your little one will be styling!  Here is how to enter...

Flash Back Friday....Moon Sand

With A&W's Birthday coming up next week, I thought it was important to rerun this post from February.  As we are in the Northeast and it will be getting too cold for outside play without mittens soon, please dear party attendees no Moon Sand!  Read on dear readers on why this Mom is not such a fan...
Oh, where to begin....Moon Sand.  Moon Sand is one of this Mom's worst nightmares.  I discovered Moon Sand about 6 months ago when I noticed it was on sale at a local Target.  It was actually marked down to about half price.  I was intrigued by the pristine children on the cover making neat little sand sculptures...I knew my boys would love it.  I just could not pass it up.

Oh, how I wish I had just kept walking past that "deal".  I don't know who those kids are on the package and I am certain those little sculptures are NOT actually made out of Moon Sand.  The scene at my house was NOTHING like this.  The packaging promises "never-ending fun" and "easy clean up".  Not so much.  The sand was not all that moldable and was impossible for the kids to keep on the play tray.  Somehow even with my direct supervision the Moon Sand ended up everywhere.  All over the floor, on socks, tracked through every room.  Luckily the "non-staining" promise is actually legit so there was no issue there.

The real clincher here is that the kids loved it.  They loved the mess factor of it and did not seem to mind so much that the sculptures did not really stay in place.  So, I did what any mom in her right mind would do...I hid it!  No more Moon Sand here, thank you very much!

My recommendation is that you only purchase Moon Sand to be played with outside or for inside if you feel like finding purple sand in your grout for the next 6 months (me!me!me!).  If you just can't pass it up here is a link to buy it for that mom in your life you are just itching to make crazy...
Oh, and PS, it is on sale.  I think I have a very good idea about why Moon Sand always seems to be on sale.  You be the judge!

Mark-My-Time Digital Bookmark Review & Giveaway...

Have we all settled into the back-to-school routines yet?  How about homework....how is that going for all of you with older kids?  I can remember my parents having to really hound me about that...it is hard to settle down with the books at the beginning of school.  The memory of summer is just too fresh to focus on reading, writing and arithmetic!  I do have a product that, I think, will help with at least some of those growing pains....the Mark-My-Time Digital Bookmark.

This is a fabulous gadget.  It is a slim bookmark that allows you to keep track of your child's reading time.  It comes in  fun colors that your kids will love and it is only $8.95!  The sleek design fits easily in between the pages of a book and at the top there is a digital clock (it runs on replaceable watch batteries).  The clock can be used two different ways, first you can use it as a countdown timer setting an allotted amount of time say, 30 minutes, of required reading time for your child.  When their time is up the alarm will sound.  The second option is the cumulative timer, ideal for multi-session reading, which tracks total time read throughout the day.  Isn't this the best invention??  It allows you to easily keep track of things like reading and homework time and let's your child keep track as well.  I think the visual part is key...it is great for kids to be able to "see" time.   When a child is struggling to get through a tough assignment knowing there is only 5 minutes left on the clock until they can be through is a great motivator.

The Mark-My-Time has won numerous awards and I am not surprised....this product is a keeper!  Here are a few the honors Mark-My-Time has received:  National Parenting Center Seal of Approval, Mr. Dad Seal of Approval, Creative Child Kids’ Product of the Year, The Family Review Center gold award and the Fat Brain Toy Award in the category of teaching toys and tools.  Not too shabby!  One more thumbs up to Mark-My-Time came in the form of Oprah when she included Mark-My-Time in O Magazine!  Even Oprah loves these bookmarks!

I think Mark-My-Time is a great tool for helping children manage homework assignments, lesson practices and anything else you need to put a set amount of time on.  Even adults can benefit from these and they can be used for cooking (leave one right in your cookbook!) or timing activities like exercising.  Pick one up today....
You can purchase the Mark-My-Time Digital Bookmark on their website,  at all or your favorite stores (click here to find a retailer near you) as well as on Amazon...

Great news....Mark-My-Time is giving one of their fantastic bookmarks to one lucky RBM reader!  Here is how to enter...

Watch it Wednesday...Shaun the Sheep: Party Animals Review & Giveaway

Happy Watch it Wednesday!  Today I have brand new release (just out on September 7th) from Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment...Shaun the Sheep:  Party Animals!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Mischief-making Shaun the Sheep™ and his fearless flock of barnyard buddies are causing mayhem in seven new revel-filled episodes in Shaun the Sheep: Party Animals. Shaun the Sheep is the second fastest growing children’s brand (Source Nielsen) and each DVD outsells the last. Five minute shorts of the series currently air in the U.S. on the Disney Channel, but full-length episodes are only available on these three formats.
DVD SYNOPSIS:
There’s no disguising the fun with Shaun the Sheep™ and his barnyard buddies in this party-fest of wild antics from the Oscar®-winning creators of “Wallace and Gromit™”. The farm is once again party central as Shaun, Bitzer, Timmy and those Naughty Pigs cause all sorts of mayhem, from flying cue balls and pillow fights to nights of disguise and intrigue. Grab your invitation to laughter for some sheep-herding mayhem that’s sure to rock the flock!

Episodes include:

Party Animals
Double Trouble
Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
Pig Swill Fly
Operation Pidsley
Shaun Goes Potty

Pig Trouble

Ok....A&W LOVE Shaun the Sheep.  This DVD had them laughing out loud almost constantly.  It is a lot of slapstick humor which appeals to little ones.  I love that the episodes are short so you can have control over the amount watched a bit more easily than with a movie.  There is no spoken dialogue with Shaun or any of the other character which for some reason bothers me but it creates zero issue for the boys who love this wacky crew...silence and all!  Pick up a copy of this one....your kids will love you for it!

The Black Cauldron...

Just in time for its' 25th anniversary, Disney has re-released The Black Cauldron.  The Black Cauldron:  25th Anniversary Special Edition is a must for all Disney lovers.

The Black Cauldron, Walt Disney Pictures’ 25th animated feature-length film, celebrates its 25th anniversary with a Special Edition DVD release September 14 from Walt Disney Home Entertainment. Based on Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain books, this mystical, action-packed adventure debuts just in time for Halloween. The film tells the story of Taran, an apprentice pig keeper with dreams of becoming a great warrior, who embarks on a quest to find a magical and powerful Black Cauldron before the evil tyrant Horned King can possess it for his own diabolical purposes. Fantastical characters like the oracular pig Hen Wen, the willful princess Eilonwy, and the droll but annoying Gurgi face witches, elves, magic swords and other obstacles. As they journey through these thrilling escapades, Taran begins to learn the true meaning of what it is to be a hero.

I vaguely remember this movie from when I was a child and I was excited to sit down and watch it (again!) with A&W.  The story is exciting but I will say it was also fairly "dark" so be watchful of that if you have  young ones who are sensitive.  Some of the images were a little bit scary for my four year olds but I think the excitement in the story line outweighed the scariness of the Horned King for them!  A&W are really into "bad guys" these days so they were really right on the edge of their seats for this one....that Horned King sure is a bad guy!!  They loved the little pig Hen Wen and I am sure want to be the heroic Taran when they grow up.  This is a great film by Disney that would make a super addition to your collection.  The suggested retail price is $19.99 but you can buy it on Amazon right now for $13.99...a bargain!!

Puzzle Baron's Logic Puzzles Review & Giveaway...

Did you know that doing things like puzzles, learning a new language or otherwise challenging yourself can help keep you sharp in your later years?  Studies show that by keeping your brain "on it's toes" you can make a difference in memory for later years.   I have just the thing to help challenge your brain and you even get to have fun while doing it!

Puzzle Baron's Logic Puzzles are fun AND challenging.  This addicting puzzle book contains 200 grid based puzzle.   For each puzzle, you are given a background story and a list of clues and then left with only pure logic to arrive at the correct answer.  As you eliminate different options you cross them off your grid helping you to find the logical answer.  These puzzle are addicting but they are challenging....not the kind of thing I can do after a full day of chasing the kids (hello exhaustion!) but definitely fun to sit, cup of coffee in hand, while I begin the day!

Something that I really like about Puzzle Baron's Logic Puzzles is that, with every puzzle, there includes statistics.  You can see the average completion time, the record completion time, and the percentage of people to complete the puzzle.  This is a great way to bring out your competitive side and to see how you rate against other puzzle wizards (don't ask about my scores!).

I think Puzzle Baron's Logic Puzzles are great for the puzzle lovers in your life and a good way to keep the old brain working!  Sharpen those pencils and sharpen those minds!  You can purchase Puzzle Baron's Logic Puzzles from Amazon...

When and why did you start blogging?

I started blogging in January 2008. I blogged for over a year and then had to take a break until the beginning of this year because of medical problems. I am a Mom of four daughters and I miss having adult interaction. Blogging was a great way to find new friends and write about my family.

I absolutely adore all the friends I have made. Being a Mom doesn't always give you enough time to have friends around. So, I know if I have a problem or need to get something off my chest I can always go to my bloggy friends. I am also having a blast doing review and giveaways! It gets addicting once you start it. Make sure to check out my giveaways!

Piggy Paint Review & Giveaway...

Now that I am mom to a  girl my radar is now not completely focused on all things construction and trains.  Now, I can turn at least some of my attention to some girly things.  Tutus and dresses and baby dolls and little painted toe nails.  Ahh....frilly time!  In preparation for the time when Baby R is ready for some Mommy & Me mani pedi's I was happy to test out Piggy Paint!

Piggy Paint is a natural, non-toxic nail polish that is just perfect for little fingers and toes.  Piggy Paint was created by a mom, Melanie Hurley, who was tired of painting the fingers and toes of her daughter's with traditional, chemical filled, polishes.  One day she watched in dismay as some spilled polish ate through a Styrofoam plate and, as a result, Piggy Paint was born.  Hooray for Mom!  I really got thinking about this and how often children put their fingers in their mouths and I was cringing thinking of all the nasty chemicals that they could be ingesting from traditional polishes...blech!  Here is a shot depicting the scary things polish can do to Styrofoam plates (never mind our children!!)...

On top of being safe for kiddos, Piggy Paint is also a whole bunch of fun!  There are loads of kid-friendly colors to choose from like an orange named "Mac-n-Cheese Please" and a clear sparkly polish called "Glass Slipper".   There is special line for tweens called Project Earth in spunky colors like a bright yellow called "Solar Power" and even a glow in the dark polish called "Radioactive".    You can buy the polishes separately or in cute little gift sets like these...

The Pink Pail is in support of breast cancer and a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for Research.

I was sent a bottle of Piggy Paint to try out in the "Girls Rule" shade as well as Piggy Paint's non-toxic polish remover.  Right away I noticed that the polish did not have that overwhelming odor you typically have with polish.   I loved the bright pink color (so fun!) and it went on easily.  The remover worked quickly and it too had way less of an odor than what I normally use.  When Baby R's nails get bigger than the little tips they are and she is not such a wiggle worm, I will surely be using Piggy Paint on her!  For now it I get it all to myself!

You can visit Piggy Paint's website to buy some of this fabulous polish for the little girly girl in your life.

DEAL ALERT:  Piggy Paint is giving Reviewed By Mom readers 10% off their entire purchase (including sale items!).  Simply enter REVIEW10L at checkout.  Hurry though, this offer expires 10/31/2010.

One Lucky Reviewed By Mom reader will win a $15 gift code from Piggy Paint!  Thanks, Piggy Paint!  Here is how to enter...

Flashback Friday...Family Fun Magazine

I am currently stealing ideas from the back to school issue in order to make myself look like Super Mom when it comes to craftiness!  Love this magazine!  Read on...

Today the newest addition of Family Fun arrived in my mailbox.  I have been a diehard fan of Family Fun since my twins were born and a family member got me a subscription.

Family Fun Magazine is geared toward parents of toddlers through grade schoolers and is filled with fabulous ideas.  In every issue you will find ideas for creative crafts, family games, holiday activities, yummy recipes as well as great ideas for family time.  Every month I find a whole slew of things to do with the kids.  In this month's issue alone I have already found 11 things I am just dying to try with the kids.  Some examples?  Making a bee house, Making Blow Paint Monsters, Cooking up some cucumber cups and testing out the Lego design of the month.  This is all from one issue...I know lots of people who save every issue for ideas and I tear pages out to save of things I want to try for later.  This is the ultimate magazine for fun ideas to do with the kids.

I will admit I am not a super creative gal but Family Fun Magazine allows me to fake it and that alone makes the subscription a steal at $9.95.  This is a must have for any mom with younger children...instant ideas to make you look like super mom.  Who can resist that??

Calvin Can't Fly...The Story of a Bookworm Birdie Review & Giveaway

I recently had the please of reading a brand new children's book to A&W....Calvin Can't Fly:  The Story of a Bookworm Birdie by Jennifer Berne.  Right away I loved the title.  Being a bookworm myself and wanting to raise bookworms, I was all for reading about this kindred spirit!

Calvin is a starling who lives "in an old barn with his three brothers, four sisters and sixty-seven thousand four hundred and thirty -two cousins."  Calvin is no ordinary bird though.  While his rather large family is discovering things like worms and grass Calvin has discovered a book and is forever smitten.  Forgoing the "usual" bird doings such as catching insects and learning to fly, Calvin spends his days at the library devouring every book he can.  Of course being different makes him the target of teasing from his family who call him "bookworm" and "geeky beaky".

When it comes time to fly south Calvin can't fly...he has been too busy reading books.  His family carries him along but right into a hurricane....thankfully Calvin's love of reading has taught him all about these storms so he is able to save the day!

This  book is charming and fun and I LOVE the message here....being different is not a bad thing and can, in fact, provide very useful!  This book also contains one of the sweetest lines I have ever read to my children..."His books took him to places his wings never could.  And his heart fluttered with excitement".  Isn't that just the best??  Isn't the author echoing what we all want for our future bookworms....a good book to take them to places of wonder, imagination and fantasy??  I really, really love that line!  The illustrations, by Keith Bendis, are superb and give real life to Calvin and his flock of family members.

Calvin Can't Fly is an excellent choice for the little bookworms in your life.  The positive message and the exciting story line will have your child asking for it again and again.  You can't miss with this one.  The recommended age for this one is 4-8 and I think that is right on the mark.  You can buy this charming book on Amazon...
