Earlier this month a brand new book was released by Harper Collins....The Call: A Novel by Yannick Murphy. Last night I was up burning the midnight oil (well....not quite midnight but late for me!) because I couldn't put this one down until I finished it. Here is the scoop...
The daily rhythm of a veterinarian’s family in rural New England is shaken when a hunting accident leaves their eldest son in a coma. With the lives of his loved ones unhinged, the veterinarian struggles to maintain stability while searching for the man responsible. But in the midst of their great trial an unexpected visitor arrives, requesting a favor that will have profound consequences—testing a loving father’s patience, humor, and resolve and forcing husband and wife to come to terms with what “family” truly means.
Yannick Murphy has a very unique way of telling the story. The entire book is set up in a sort of "memo" or log style. It is a way of setting u7the stage for the events that take place that I found very interesting. I have never read anything quite like it. It always starts with "The Call" (the main character is a vet) and then things like "Action", "Result" and "What "so and so" said or did". When I first started I thought it might be tough to read in this set up but it was not at all. Now for the story...this one will stay with you. Murphy has a gift for bringing a family to life...I feel like I KNOW the Appletons. She also managed to depict the small town and its' residence to perfection. I fell in love with the characters and could not have put this down last night no matter how late it got! This is a book that will stay with you and will be one you want to share with friends so you can talk about it. Two thumbs up for this read! Pick it up today on Amazon...
Great news, readers! Harper Collins is giving one lucky RBM reader a copy of The Call: A Novel by Yannick Murphy! Thanks so much to the sponsor and here is how to enter...

I do most of my reading before going to sleep. This is when the pain of my lupus and rheumatoid arthritis seems to set in. Reading helps me to relax.

I love to read at bedtime and in the afternoon. Actually I read most anytime I can. I always have a book in the car just in case I can read for a minute while waiting for kids to get to the carpool.
I do most of my reading in the morning before it gets too warm and makes me feel like napping!
I, too, do most of my reading before bedtime. I also take the book I'm reading in the car to read while I'm waiting on my kids.

I read at night mostly. Unless the book is really good, then I'm useless. I cook and then retire to the book and read every free moment.
i read mainly after supper time, or while waiting for something like an appointment

I like to read in bed before I go to sleep and if it's a really interesting story, I'll end up seeing the sun rise and not getting a wink of sleep. :-)
I mostly read in the evenings!

The Call called me, only faintly at first with its terse log-like entries. So this is going to be a book about a country vet who delivers goats, sews up a horse that listens to classical music, and relates to a zebra? It is. And more.
I've been inside the head of David Appleton and the heart of the Appleton family. A heart that holds lots of love and laughter, but is also pulled, twisted, and strained. Murphy knows about families and knows how to tell their stories--very well. Despite its unusual abrupt style, she brings the Appleton family fully to life, not only David and Jen, but the three children. Nights are cold; snow falls. Parents bicker. Children come out with the unexpected. Family dinners are so delicious, that I flipped to the back vainly hoping for recipes. Ah, the pork chops! Oh, the gypsy soup. Outside of the household, Murphy has captured many of the small town's 600 quirky residents in brief but colorful sketches. She has an eye; she has an ear; she has a true voice.
