September is Baby Safety Month. I know we all do our very best to keep our little ones safe and I always try and keep up with current studies so I can be sure I am doing what is best. Something I know is useful in preventing SIDS is swaddling. Now, I am just NOT one of those people who can wrap a baby up all burrito like. Thank goodness for me that HALO has a wonderful product out there...the HALO SleepSack Swaddle. This was instrumental in me getting Baby R all cozied up for sleep in those early days. Not only did she sleep better being swaddled but I did not have to worry about her suffocating on loose blankets which allowed me to rest a lot easier. When I am asked about must haves for new moms the HALO SleepSack ALWAYS makes it to the top of my list!
I also want to mention something about the traditional receiving blanket way of swaddling (you know...the burrito!). When you swaddle the baby with legs straight, they can suffer from hip dyspalasia. Here is more information...
Hip
Dysplasia is one of the most common conditions among newborn babies, affecting
about 1% of North American newborns (about 75,000 per year). According to a
recent survey conducted by HALO Innovations, 82% of parents choose to swaddle,
and swaddling improperly can lead to Hip Dysplasia or dislocation. Treatment
ranges from wearing a harness or brace to undergoing surgery. These condistions
can get worse with age and are linked to early adult arthritis and
hip-replacement surgery.
The
American Academy of Pediatrics is
urging Pediatricians to watch for signs of hip dysplasia and dislocation and to
warn parents not to extend their baby’s frog-like legs straight when swaddling.
There’s a temptation to stretch the legs out and that needs to be resisted. They
need to be able to straighten themselves out naturally and gradually. Parents
should allow for room in the swaddle – or sleepsack – for baby to bend at the
hips.
All the more reason to use the HALO SleepSack Swaddle in my opinion. You can find additional information about baby safety and HALO by visiting www.halosleep.com. You can purchase the HALO SleepSack Swaddle at Babies R Us and on Amazon...
I am so pleased to tell you that HALO will be giving one lucky RBM a HALO SleepSack Swaddle (choice of size newborn or small and boy, girl or neutral). Thanks so much to the sponsor and here is how to enter... Pin It

Make sure to switch sides when holding your infant, so that both their eyes are strong not just one side. Not so much a safety tip, but a healthy child tip.
I like your blog, i think you have interesting reviews and giveaways.
Number one safety tip would be to turn down the temperature on the water heater.
