Multiply and Divide with Stick and Steps...Review & Giveaway!

My kiddos are still small but soon enough the will be entering the classroom and will be faced with learning more complex than sharing with your friends.  When they do enter that realm I want them to feel confident and successful.  When I hear about guides to help children in the classroom I am always very interested because I want all the tools I need in my  pocket to help my children along.  I was recently given a book called Multiply and Divide with Sticks and Steps by Maureen Stearns and I was very interested in checking it out.  As the title suggests, it helps children with math which is actually something I really struggled with when I was a kid.  Here is the scoop...

Math concepts can seem very abstract, but in just a short time, literally in just 5 minutes, students can learn how to multiply. This book concretely shows what multiplication is, instead of just having students memorize the times tables. It gives step-by-step instructions as well as sample problems showing how the process works. A natural flow occurs throughout the book as concepts get more difficult. Also included are easy ways to divide, find least common multiples, and square roots. This simple, hands-on method will help students achieve a better understanding of mathematics and boost self-confidence as well. Students will become so proficient they will be able to teach Sticks and Steps to others who struggle with multiplication and division. Multiply and Divide with Sticks® and Steps is easy to learn, easy to teach, and so logical, it's easy to remember. An essential resource for parents and educators to carry with them in their bag of tricks.

When I went through this book I was very impressed.  This is a wonderful way to teach children who struggle with the traditional way of multiplication and division.  It is quick and easy to learn (and teach!) and I think this method would be tremendously helpful to children who learn more visually.  I really wish I'd had this book as a kid because it would have saved a lot of frustration.  I am a visual learner and the traditional memorization method did not work so well for me.  I think this really would have helped!  Multiply and Divide with Sticks and Steps is ready to go for when A, W & R head off to school!  If you have a child who is learning their tables this would be a great book to go over with them this summer.  You can pick up your copy today on Amazon...

Wisharoo Park...Review & Giveaway!

You all know how important I think quality children's programming is.  When the kids watch television I like it to be something of substance while also being something they find enjoyable.  Sometimes it is hard to find this balance though....educational AND appealing can be a bit of a tough one to master but I have found a multimedia line which does it to perfection...Wisharoo Park!

Wisharoo Park is dedicated to promoting positive self-image and self-esteem in preschool age children. It was originally introduced by airing as a children’s TV series on PBS stations across the country and is now rolling out as a dynamic multimedia program which includes the interactive website WisharooPark.com, DVDs and more! .

Unique among preschool programs, Wisharoo Park is designed to help children age 3 – 6 recognize and appreciate their individuality. With its groundbreaking technology-based curriculum, Wisharoo Park helps children discover and understand their personal strengths and put them on the road to developing greater self-esteem.  The Wisharoopark.com enchanting online community stars a whimsical cast of lovable animated, puppet and human characters who are featured in games, videos, music and more!  Each week exciting new activities and content are added that are sure to keep parents and their kids coming back again and again.

The kids and I were sent some some adorable Wisharoo Park Star finger puppets along with a 2 disc DVD set of the series and all three of the kids LOVED it.  It really is a fun series.  The characters are super engaging and the songs and stories really engrossing.  My boys really seemed to enjoy the characters of Pompy (a skunk rocking a cool Elvis hairdo!) and Monkey B ( a music loving, hat sporting monkey!).  The cast is just full of interesting characters which help drive home the positive messages the show promotes.  The little wish star puppets were tons of fun and the kids have been having a blast with these on their hands...such a cute and imaginative toy!

On top of the great DVD's, Wisharoo Park's website has been a big hit, especially with "W".  He especially likes the game section which includes jigsaw puzzles which he just adores.  We have also enjoyed the Activities section which includes printable sorting games, coloring pages and instructions on how to make a drum.  This is, for sure, a website in which you can feel comfortable with your children navigating.

Wisharoo Park gets thumbs up from mom and company for the DVD's, the website AND the finger puppets!  You can find all this fun over at Wisharoo Park!

Yahoo & Girls For A Change!!

The following is a post sponsored by Yahoo! Every time someone clicks here to make Yahoo! their homepage, they're showing their support for Girls For A Change.

I was selected for this opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Girls For A Change (GFC) is a national organization that empowers girls to create social change. We invite young women to design, lead, fund and implement social change projects that tackle issues girls face in their own neighborhoods. GFC empowers girls for personal and social transformation. The program inspires girls to have the voice, ability and problem solving capacity to speak up, be decision makers, create visionary change and realize their full potential."

Can you say amazing program??  As a woman and the mother of a little girl I can't stress how important I think it is to enpower our girls.  Our society has come a long way in giving girls more of a voice but there is always room for growth and change.  Girls For A Change (GFC) give girls a chance to make a significant impact in their communities and helps to pave the way for a life of confidence and social awareness.  I think this program is simply amazing.  Some of the "team projects" (this is where 5-10 girls are paired with 2 coaches) that are happening right now are Immigration Education in San Jose and Cease the Violence Against Women in Richmond.

There is something super easy we can all do now to help keep this amazing program going. Yahoo! will donate $10 to Girls For A Change (GFC) for each person who clicks here to make Yahoo! her homepage by July 1...up to an amazing $10,000!  How great is this and how easy!  Besides helping a great cause such as Girls For A Change making Yahoo your homepage gives you these added benefits...
  1. Personalized content: The Yahoo! homepage delivers you the most relevant content based on your interests, time of day, and what’s most popular with other users like you.

  2. Your World and The World: The Yahoo! homepage uniquely brings together your world (your email, local news) with the world around you (current events, entertainment news, financial updates and more)

  3. Human Interest: Articles on the homepage have a human approach – more than just news, it delivers human interest stories that you just have to click on.
I would say this is a no brainer, wouldn't you??  So, what are you waiting for?  Head on over and help make a difference (and get a great new homepage!).

Animal ABC's and 123's...Review & Giveaway!

I have two adorable DVD's to tell you about today that will be released on July 12th from NCircle Entertainment....Animal ABC's and Animal 123's.  These fun filled DVD's help your little ones learn their alphabet and numbers while entertaining them with animals.  Here is the scoop...

Synopsis
Introduce preschoolers to letters and numbers using the amazing animal kingdom!  Animal ABCs and Animal 123’s strengthens letter, number and animal name recognition by teaching children about animals from around the globe. Sing along as we explore Earth’s animals, from the cute and cuddly to the wild and wonderful.  These DVDs include fun facts, unique songs and a bonus sections with flashcards.  Practicing your ABCs and 123s has never been so fun!

All three of the kids LOVE these DVD's.  A&W (aged 4 1/2) really got into the letters and numbers while Baby R (aged 1 1/2) was SO into the singing and animals.  I really enjoyed watching the kids get so into the animals (we had just visited the aquarium when we first watched so the penguins were a HUGE hit!) and I, of course, enjoyed the educational quality.  These DVD's are a great addition to  your DVD collection and would make a great birthday gift for the 2-6 crowd.  The graphics are vivid, the music is catchy and the animals are so much fun to watch and learn with.  You can pre-order your copies today from Amazon...

The Complete Idiots Guide for Dummies Challenge: Total Nutrition VS Nutrition...Review & Giveaway!

There is a new challenge going on right now and I was thrilled when I was asked to participate....The Complete Idiot's Guide for Dummies Challenge!  What is this exactly?  Well, it is taking two popular "how-to" books and giving them a side by side comparison....love it!  The contenders up for round one?  The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total Nutrition VS  Nutrition for Dummies.  Here is a description of each book...

Good health starts with good nutrition. With all the constant debate over diet fads, proper nutrition is slipping through the cracks. This revised and updated guide places the emphasis on good health by informing families of everything they need to know to get the best nutrition—from daily vitamin and mineral intake and facts about fats and cholesterol, to advice on shopping for healthy foods, and much more.

-Includes updates to the USDA’s Food Guide Pyramid
-New numbers for blood pressure and sodium intake
-A section on helping overweight children
-New fiber recommendations for kids
-A new section on macrobiotics and raw diets

About the Author

Joy Bauer maintains a nutritional counseling practice for both adults and children. Named “Best Nutritionist in New York City” by New York Magazine, she has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, The View, VH1, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. She regularly contributes to Fitness, Allure, Cosmopolitan, Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, the New York Post, and more.

Health reporter Carol Ann Rinzler has produced a comprehensive volume ideal for both occasional reference and a more in-depth introduction to nutrition. Nutrition for Dummies discusses vitamins, minerals, fat content, carbohydrates, and more, prescribing practical ways to incorporate more nutritious eating into everyday life. Particularly helpful is the nutrient chart in the back of the book, which includes extensive nutritional information (gleaned from the USDA Nutrient Database) about hundreds of foods and instructions for accessing the entire database via the Web. -

My mother-in-law "The Queen Bee" is way into nutrition so I asked her for her take on both series and here is what  she had to say...

After reading these two guides to nutrition, one definitely stood out to me over the other. Both were filled with many useful facts about food, vitamins, minerals and all things good for the body. The first thing I noticed was the write up for the author, located on the back of each book. I know if I am reading a health book, I always want to see the credentials of the person writing the book. The Idiots Guide is authored by Joy Bauer, who holds 3 degrees in Nutrition. She also writes a column for SELF magazine and has built one of the country's largest Nutrition centers. She appears on lots of talk shows to talk about nutrition. The Dummies book is authored by Carol Ann Rinzler and the back of the book gives her one line: She is a noted authority and the author of 20 books. So right there I see that I would rather read the Idiots guide. Just opening the books to any page and you can see a big difference. the Idiots guide is full of facts but it is broken up with "Food for Thought" boxes which are helpful hints, and "Nutrition Speak" boxes, which are explanations or definitions of nutrition facts. There is a box called "Q & A" and it is an  answer to a question you might have while you are reading through the chapter. At the end of the chapter the author summarizes with "The Least You Need to Know" which I find helpful when you are trying to sort through so much information. There is also a great section of healthy recipes.
The Dummies guide is much like a text book, and unfortunately I felt like there might be a quiz after. Not a "fun" book to read. It was all pretty straight forward and all the information is very good, if you can stay interested enough to read it through. There are quite a few fact tables in this book, so you could easily browse through the tables and glean a fair amount of information from them alone.
well, there you have it. The Idiots Guide was a clear winner for me in a comparison of both books. I do recommend picking up this guide to anyone heading out on the healthy path.
We have a winner....The Complete Idiot's Guide to Nutrition takes the trophy in this battle!  You can c pick up your copy today on the Complete Idiot's website.

Bob the Builder: The Big Dino Dig...Review & Giveaway!

I owe a lot to Bob the Builder.  When I was pregnant, Bob and his faithful team of helpers allowed me a half hour of time to rest in an otherwise "mile a minute" day raising twins under three.  Bob the Builder mesmerises the boys even now (and now Baby R is starting to become a fan) and I love the positive team work and problem solving messages the episodes promote.  When I got the opportunity to review a  MOVIE  from Bob I was thrilled.  Here is the scoop on the just released (June 14th) movie...

Bob the Builder has paired with another building icon – LEGOLAND® – to promote the DVD movie premiere.  As part of a national promotion with LEGOLAND, each Bob the Builder: The Big Dino Dig The Movie DVD includes a coupon for a free Child Ticket with paid Adult Ticket to any LEGOLAND attraction.  In addition, the DVD includes a special offer for a free child’s admission to SplashDown Beach waterpark in Fishkill, New York featuring the new attraction, Bob the Builder Splash Works™.

Hold on to your hard hat for a roller coaster ride of thrills, discovery and fun!

Our take?  Once again, Angelina Ballerina delivers fun along with positive messages.  Even though this DVD is certainly marketed more toward girls, my boys enjoy watching and there are some boy characters as well.  Angelina is fun for boys AND girls!  The animation is pretty incredible and the characters are so lifelike.  I think my kids particularly enjoyed the music in this one and it had them off their feet and moving on more than one occasion.  Thumbs up for Angelina Ballerina:  Pop Star Girls!  You can pick up your copy today on Amazon for just $11.99...

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules...Review!

Are you looking for something family friendly to watch this weekend?  If so, be sure to pick up Diary of a Wimpy Kid:  Rodrick Rules today!  Here is the scoop on this just released (June 21st) flick...

Greg Heffley is about to discover that there is something worse than middle school – his own family! Based on the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice™ Award for Best Book Series, the original film cast returns in DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES, available on Blu-ray and DVD on June 21st. This flick takes sibling rivalry to entirely new levels as big brother and little brother wrestle through growing pains.

Just back from summer vacation, Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon, National Treasure: Book of Secrets) and his friend Rowley (Robert Capron, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) enter the next grade as undersized weaklings in their school. A bully favorite, Greg tries not to get noticed by anyone except the pretty new girl, Holly Hills (Peyton List, 27 Dresses). And at home, Greg is still at war with his older brother, Rodrick (Devon Bostick, “Degrassi”), until their mom Susan (Rachael Harris, The Hangover) instigates a ‘Mom Bucks’ program so Greg and Rodrick can earn play money by doing chores and—gasp!—being nice to each other. Calamity ensues when their parents return from vacation and dad Frank (Steve Zahn, A Perfect Getaway) finds evidence that Rodrick secretly threw a houseparty with his band, Löded Diper. As they struggle with school and compete for ‘Mom Bucks,’ the brothers discover that avoiding trouble is easier if they unite—and their once-twisted partnership grows into a hilariously playful and sometimes mischievous friendship.

My kiddos are a little on the young side for this one but I am not too grown -up to watch a "kid" movie!  I thought this movie was so cute....it was very touching with humor that will certainly appeal to the younger set.  I really liked the overall message of the importance of family and teamwork and think many a feuding sibling duo could relate to the scenarios!  After watching it, I don't think there was anything really inappropriate for very young children so this one would be great to watch as a family.  Is Friday night movie night at your house??  If  so, pick up something for everyone...Diary of a Wimpy Kid:  Rodrick Rules!

DNAEGF Renewal: DNA Night Renewal...Review!

DNAEGF Renewal is the latest technology in skincare. Using DNA Repair Enzymes and Epidermal Growth Factors (EGF), leading dermatologist Dr Ron Moy offers a scientific skincare line that utilizes the latest technology to keep skin young looking and in optimum condition.

Dr Ronald L. Moy, renowned scientist, researcher, dermatologist, and cosmetic surgeon, has dedicated his life’s work to understanding the impact of photo damage on skin health and aging.  Dr Moy practices at Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, CA, and at the California Health and Longevity Institute at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village, CA.  He is also the President of the AAD.

When I was approached to do a review of a product from the DNAEGF Skincare line I could not say yes fast enough.  I am in my 30's now and am all too aware of wrinkles and sun spots.  This sounded like a line that would be a great fit for me.  When I received a sample of the DNA Night Renewal cream I could not wait to try it out.  Here is the scoop...

This rich, night time lotion treatment - featuring an advanced liposome delivery system - maximizes heightened cell repair activity during the body's sleep cycle to recover skin's youth.
  • Induces cell regeneration and counters photo-aging damage to restore skin vitality
  • High levels of bio-advanced DNA Repair Enzymes, peptides, and botanical actives boost youthful cell turn over
  • Builds and fortifies a healthy lipid barrier
  • Ideal for dry or stressed skin
  • For night-time use
I can't speak to the long term affects of the use of this product but I can say it was DECADENT going on.  It felt like velvet on my skin and it was just, flat out, luxurious.  My skin did look brighter and more refreshed right away and I am considering splurging on this product because it really seems worth.  The price tag IS steep though at $130 per bottle (gulp!).  I have, however, been saving a bundle on groceries lately so maybe this can be my reward.  Besides, $130 is not really all that much in return for great skin!  You can check out the whole regime at the DNAEGF Renewal Website.  You can also find the on Facebook and Twitter.

Disclosure:  I was given a sample of the above mentioned product for purpose of review.  The thoughts expressed are 100% my own and have not been altered in any way. Pin It

eChook...Review & Giveaway!

As you all know, I love to read.  It really is one of my most favorite passtimes.  My days are busy though and I often don't have time to sit down and really dive into a book without having to put it down or be interuppted.  Enter the eChook!  Have you heard of this?  If not, here is the scoop...

The best of two worlds have merged to bring the overworked and under-rested 10-minutes of transcendent bliss. Award-winning short story writer Tessa Smith McGovern has wedded the restorative nature of getting lost in a story to the immediacy of modern technology to bring readers eChook. More than brain candy, eChook offers apps full of well-written short stories that soothe the soul like 10-minutes of literary gourmet chocolate.
Taking from the idea of the chapbook -- small, single-chapter books that were the latest technology in 16th-century England -- McGovern developed eChook, an app that turned her linked short stories into digital chapbooks. She wanted to reimagine the short story genre for a generation that does too much and rests too little. “Life-affirming, thoughtful stories can help us relax so we can attend that next meeting, collect the kids or greet our families with more energy and joy,” McGovern says.
There are several ways to enjoy eChook. Readers can buy full-color chapbooks from the app store in almost a dozen ways: on their iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, from www.eChook.com or iTunes, and coming soon on Kindle or Nook. Choices include collections of short stories linked by a single theme (such as Memoir) or collections of linked short stories that follow engaging characters through different adventures. Each app features information pages with enriched content such as “About the Author,” and “Memoir and Fiction.” eChook offers short stories that are light in your pocket and on your pocket book.

Ok...I love this.  I really, really do.  To be able to read, quality short stories is a little slice of heaven for me.  I was sent London Road to read and it was a wonderful collection of connected short stories about people living in a boarding house.  I liked how the characters were interconnected and I loved how I could gobble up the stories in short bits.  Ahh...me time!  You can find out more about eChook by visiting the eChook website Here. I would really encourage you to check this out...I know a lot of you are like me and don't do much as far as "me" time goes.  The eChook allows you to escape for a few minutes here and there.  I think we should ALL at least be able to commit to that....we deserve it!

There is also an open calls for submission of published or unpublished fiction for all you writers out there and it pays up to $550!  Find out more here...http://eChook.com/submissions.

In celebration of eChook, one lucky Reviewed by Mom reader will win an eChook Swag Bag (these were given out at Sundance by the way!!) which includes an eChook chapstick, an eChook mug, eChook mouse pad, chocolate treats, teas and more.  Such a great way to spoil yourself!  Thanks so much to the sponsor for a great prize AND product!   Here is how to enter...
