Fante by Dan Fante...Review & Giveaway!

Are you looking for a great, new, thought provoking read?  Look no further than the new release from Harper Collins...Fante by Dan Fante.  Here is a snapshot of what you can expect from these well written pages....

No two lives could have been more different, yet similar in a few essential ways than John and Dan Fante′s. As father and son, John and Dan Fante were prone to fights, resentment and extended periods of silence. As men, they were damaged by alcoholism. As writers, they were compelled by anger, rage and unstoppable passion.
In FANTE, Dan Fante traces his family′s history from the hillsides of Italy to the immigrant neighborhoods of Colorado to Los Angeles. There, John Fante struggles to gain the literary recognition he so badly craves, and despite the publication of his best known work, ASK THE DUST, he turns to the steady paycheck of Hollywood, working as a screenwriter to support his family. We follow Dan through a troubled childhood to his discovery of life′s vices through work as a carnival barker and later as he hitchhikes to New York City, where he drives a taxi for twelve years. While John Fante′s rage over his perceived failures as a writer and his struggle with debilitating diabetes make him more and more miserable, Dan struggles with alcoholic blackouts, suicidal thoughts and what he deems a broken mind.
John was a writer whose literary contributions were not recognised until the end of his life. Dan was an alcoholic saved by writing, who at the age of 45 picked up his father′s old typewriter in order to ease the madness in his mind. Fante is the story of the evolution of a relationship between father and son who eventually found their way back to loving each other.

Nutrition: What Every Parent Needs to Know...Review & Giveaway!

One of our basic duties as parents is to make sure our children are fed.  One would think this particular duty was pretty straightforward.  Feed.   Water.  Repeat. Not so much.  It is so incredibly important to feed our children nutritious food and with so much information out there on top of the ease of often unhealthy convenience food at our fingertips it is hard to know what is the right choice to make.  When I was offered the chance to read and review Nutrition:  What Every Parent Needs to Know from the American Academy of Pediatrics I was excited to check it out.  As of mom to three growing children knowing what is healthy is of the utmost importance to me.  Here is the scoop...

From the moment a baby is born and for the ensuing 18 or so years, parents strive to ensure that their child is well-fed. The questions and struggles over food and proper nutrition seem never ending:
  • My baby doesn't seem to nurse very long. Is he getting enough to eat?
  • My toddler refuses to eat anything except macaroni and cheese. What can I do?
  • The media report that school lunches aren't nutritious. Should I be packing her lunch instead?
  • Our life is so hectic we rely on fast-food several times a week. Is this a problem?
  • My child seems to be taller...shorter...heavier...slimmer than other children in her class. Is that OK?
Now there is a single resource parents can turn to for answers to all these questions and so much more. Nutrition: What Every Parent Needs to Know, 2nd Edition by the American Academy of Pediatrics, William H. Dietz, MD, PhD, FAAP and Loraine Stern, MD, FAAP, Editors (©10/2011), is a complete guide for maintaining children's nutritional health from birth through adolescence.

The information and strategies needed to meet kids' dietary needs at all ages and stages are examined in detail. Standards of weight and height, eating disorders, alternative diets and supplements, allergies, cholesterol-lowering medications, and concerns regarding food safety are covered. Growth charts are highlighted, and several topic boxes are scattered throughout the book. Each chapter ends with a Q&A section on issues parents often raise about the topic addressed in that chapter, making it easy to refer back to again and again as children move from one stage to another.
Drs. Dietz and Stern stress throughout the book that parents and care providers' primary responsibility is to offer a healthful variety of foods. "Your children," they state, "are responsible for deciding what and how much they want to eat from what they are offered."

Developing healthy eating habits, parents are reminded, is an ongoing activity; one day or week does not make or break good health. Rather, parents are urged to learn how to feed their children a wholesome diet and maintain a healthful lifestyle, how to allow for individual styles and preferences, and how to make shared mealtimes enjoyable as well as stress- and guilt-free.

UR Some 1...Review & Giveaway!

On October 18th a new CD was released from Recess Music, one of my favorite sources for great children's music (they were behind Big Bully, recently featured here on the site).  When I heard about U R Some 1, I couldn't wait to have a listen with the kids.  Here is the scoop...

All the songs on U R Some 1 highlight self-esteem as a key ingredient for living in harmony with others by celebrating the concept that “there is no one quite like you, and you are perfect just the way you are!”  This happy, upbeat album also affirms for kids that all humans are “the same & different AND different & the same.”  U R Some 1’s musical adventure in self-awareness includes 12 tracks that showcase contributions by a sampling of today’s most gifted kids’ musicians, including Peter Himmelman, Anna Moo, and Katherine Dines.

U R Some 1 opens with the welcoming message of “U R U,” featuring the friendly voices of The Happy Crowd. The album offers up some nifty scientific info on “Body Parts” by Amy Lowe and the rollicking “The Five Senses Boogie” by The Bee’s Knees. Katherine Dines extols the power of imagination on “It’s Amazing What You Can Do With Your Brain.” Anna Moo’s joyous, 12-bar blues, “You’re An Animal Too.” is sure to get kids up and dancing.  Slugs and Bugs’ Woody Guthrie-influenced “Piggy Little Toes” is a showcase for some exquisite five-string banjo and fiddle playing.  The country sounds of The Coles’ “Put Your Happy Face On” are guaranteed to cheer up little ones who are having a rough day. Seth Decker encourages kids not to follow the crowd but, rather, to “Follow Your Nose.” Likewise, a “listen to the voice inside you” message is endorsed by Palo Colorado on his smooth, easy listening “Still Small Voice.” A breathtakingly beautiful a capella preamble enhances the anti-war message of Lisa Atkinson’s “Arms Are For Hugging.”   Peter Himmelman incorporates Big Band sounds on “Feet,” an ode to the pedal extremities featuring his highly entertaining backup singers. The Swingset Mamas, exuding style and confidence, bring the album to an inspirational close with a happy beat on their “Great To Be Me”

Shindigz Party Supplies...Review & Giveaway!

Last weekend we celebrated "Baby" R's 2nd birthday. I simply can't wrap my head around the fact that my itty bitty Baby R is now a bubbly, busy 2 year old who refers to herself as a princess. My how time flies!  I love throwing parties and we usually throw our birthday parties at home.  I love to decorate and this year we picked a princess theme for our very own Princess.  Perfect!

I have used lots of different chain and online stores for party supplies over the years and I am always blown away by the sheer expense of party decor...yowza!  When I had the opportunity to work with Shindigz I couldn't wait.  The prices seemed MUCH more reasonable than what I had experienced with other retailers (hooray!) and I was anxious to check out the quality.

When I went to the Shindigz website I was really impressed by the selection.  There are so many options for every kind of party you can imagine.  There is also a HUGE selection of party extras like games, goodie bag fillers and crafts. I was blown away.

Mom's Spooky Spider Cookies...

6 TBS Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
10 TBS unsalted butter (softened)
1 C sugar
1 Large egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 C chocolate sprinkles
Mini M&M's (regular sized work too in a pinch)
Mini Pretzel Sticks (snapped in 2)

Preheat oven to 350.  Mix together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt.  In a separate bowl cream butter and sugar with electric mixer until fluffy.  Beat in egg and vanilla until smooth.  Slowly add in flour mixture.  Roll teaspoons of dough between  your hands to form balls.  Roll balls in sprinkles and then place on cookie sheet leaving plenty of room between each.  Press lightly on each ball to flatten slightly.  Place two M&M's on one end of each ball.  Insert 4 pretzel stick halves on each side of ball.   Bake cookies for 12 minutes (they will appear "dry" on top).  Let cool on wire rack.  Enjoy!

Hip Peas Hair Styling Balm...PTPA Winner Review!

As you may know, on top of being a blogger here on Reviewed by Mom I am also a blogger over on the PTPA website.  I love doing this as it keeps me in the know about all the latest and greatest products out there for families.  I also get the chance to help determine which products get the coveted PTPA seal off approval.  I have three products which made the cut this month and I am so excited to tell you about them.  First on the list?  Hip Peas Hair Styling Balm!  Here is an overview about this styling product I was lucky enough to road test...

Hip Peas Hair Balm does it all with no hidden bad stuff: our products are free of parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, and sulfates. The berry-licious aroma? Compliments of natural extracts and essential oils. We’re nontoxic and hypoallergenic. All ingredients meet stringent European Cosmetics Directive (EU) and Japanese standards. Plus, Hip Peas supports PETA in the ethical treatment of animals.

First of all, I loved that Hip Peas is eco friendly, not filled with yucky chemicals and is cruelty free.  I want to feel good about the products I use on the kids and Hip Peas definitely fits the bill there!  The smell was also great...not overpowering, just light and fresh.   It worked very well for two very different styling methods.  First, it worked like a charm on my daughter's wispy, fine hair as I worked it into a cute little bun.  It also worked great to slick back and/or spike my 5 year old sons hair which they thought was SO fun.  I will also admit to snagging a bit for my own unruly curly hair.  Love a hair care product suitable for the whole family!  You can purchase Hip Peas Hair Styling Balm on the company website HERE for $11.95.  You can also stay up to date on product information on their Twitter and Facebook pages.  Happy Styling!

Don't Sing at the Table...Review & Giveaway!

Earlier this month a new release hit the shelves....Don't Sing at the Table by Adriana Trigiani.  Here is the scoop....
New York Times bestselling author Adriana Trigiani shares a treasure trove of insight and guidance from her two grandmothers: time-tested, common sense advice on the most important aspects of a woman’s life, from childhood to the golden years. Seamlessly blending anecdote with life lesson, Don’t Sing at the Table tells the two vibrant women’s real-life stories—how they fell in love, nurtured their marriages, balanced raising children with being savvy businesswomen, and reinvented themselves with each new decade. For readers of Big Stone Gap, Very Valentine, Lucia, Lucia, and Rococo, this loving memoir is the Trigiani family recipe for chicken soup for the soul.
My mother in law the Queen Bee dug right into this one and this is what she had to say...

Grandmothers give all kinds of sage advice. I think most of it probably is in one ear and out the other when we are young. Fodder for eye rolling in our teenage years, I am sure. But as we get older and have grandchildren of our own, these little gems of wisdom start coming out of our own mouths. Trigiani's Don't Sing at the Table is a compilation of great advice from both of her grandmothers. Some spoken, some unwittingly aborbed.
The author was very lucky to have spent alot of time with both of her hard-working Italian grandmothers. Both very strong women with very strong opinions on family and business. Viola was a seamstress who started as a sewing machine operator in a clothing factory. She was promoted to manager, and after she married, co-owned a blouse factory with her husband. Lucia was also a sewing machine operator in a children's clothing factory.  When she married a shoemaker, they planned to open their own shoe business but unfortunately her husband died suddenly at age 39. Lucia worked in a shoe factory making children's shoes while she put her three children through college.
Trigiani writes about her two grandmothers with humor and respect, telling stories of the  history of her family, from Italy to New York and beyond. A sentimental journey packed with advice that we could all use !
Sounds like a great read, packed with lots of grandmotherly advice!  Pick it up today on Amazon...

The publisher, Harper Collins is giving one lucky RBM reader a copy of Don't Sing at the Table! Thanks so much to the sponsor and here is how to enter...

Halloween HexBug Party....Boo!

For the past 6 months or so my house house been infested....with Hexbugs!! A&W each own a couple of HEXBUGS and they are so much fun.  These little robotic bugs are so realistic that they have definitely creeped me out on a number of occasions!  They scurry and scatter through the house just like real creepy crawlies and the kids just love them.  When I was selected to host a HEXBUG Nano Halloween party and this arrived the kids just about collapsed in excitement....

This was so incredibly cool and raised my mommy cool factor to never seen before heights!  Included in the package were three sets of the habitats (2 glow in the dark habitats and 1 elevation habitat set) which included a bunch of track to make some very exciting structures as well as rare HEXBUGS inside.  There were also a variety of 15 Galileo Glow in the Dark HEXBUGS and 12 glow in the dark Halloween Zombie HEXBUGS (these are so fun...the come in a little coffin and have a skeleton on their backs!). The kids just went wild.

Over the weekend we made up goodie bags for the kids at our annual family pumpkin party.  The kids and I had so much fun making the goodie bags up with candy, and 2 HEXBUGS...

The kids and I also made extra special creepy, crawly cookies in honor of the HEXBUGS (stay tuned for my recipe later this week)...

Before the HEXBUGS descended on the guests we all got buys decorating our pumpkins (a big tradition) and filing up on some frightfully good food....

When I presented the kids with the goodie bags they were just SO excited.  These buzzing critters were a huge hit and the kids all had a great time chasing them around the yard, having them race and watching them maneuver around pine needle piles....

Some of the kids at the party had never seen or owned a HEXBUG before the party and I would definitely say they are now big fans like we are in our house.  I really like HEXBUGS because they encourage creative play.  We love the tracks and habitats but the kids and I also really like to see how they get themselves out of different homemade mazes (shoe boxes and Little R's doll house are current favorites and later today we are going to see what happens when we blow them up into a balloon!).  I also really like how HEXBUGS appeal to such a broad range of ages.  Little R loves them at just 2 and the older kids (over 10) loved them just as much.  Even the grownups had fun playing with them!

Find our more about HEXBUGS at their website HERE or follow them on Twitter  HERE.

Thanks so much to HEXBUGS and MomSelect for providing the goods to host this party.  All views are 100% my own!

Young Justice Season One Volume Two...Out October 25th!!

A new DVD release hits the shelves tomorrow and you won't want to miss it!  Young Justice Season One Volume Two is available for purchase tomorrow.  Here is the scoop...

Animated DC Universe cartoon series for a new generation starring ROBIN, AQUALAD, KID FLASH, SUPERBOY, MISS MARTIAN and ARTEMIS . Combined these six teenage heroes are YOUNG JUSTICE the JUSTICE LEAGUE’s secret weapon against the forces of evil. Based out of THE CAVE, the teen heroes will take on under-the-radar missions that would be impossible for the League proper (with its incandescent star-power) to handle covertly. In addition, these kids are in constant training to take their place alongside the great heroes. RED TORNADO will be their supervisor; BLACK CANARY will be in charge of their training, and BATMAN will hand out their assignments. And of course, Young Justice will push their missions, often turning a simple assignment from Batman into something much larger, often discovering that what they’ve been tasked to do is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you have an older super hero fan in our house this is a must. It is fun, action packed and exciting.  Pre-order it today from Amazon for just $10.99...

*Disclosure: I received a copy of the above mentioned product for purpose of review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Winnie the Pooh (out 10/25!) DVD Blu-Ray Giveaway!

Winnie the Pooh is being released tomorrow and I can't wait to see it with the kids (we love pooh and all his friends!!). Here is the scoop....

Author A.A. Milne's beloved bear, Winnie the Pooh, joins forces with his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood to help two of their own in Disney's hand-drawn charmer. Though he describes himself as a "bear of very little brain," Pooh (Jim Cummings) proves he's all heart when sad-sack Eeyore's tail goes missing and a terrible creature called the "Backson" abducts Christopher Robin (Jack Boulter), their human protector (the schoolboy actually leaves a note saying he will be "back soon"). Granted, our hero spends the entire journey dreaming about glorious pots of "hunny," but when push comes to shove, he prioritizes his pals over his tummy, which rumbles and expands as his hunger pangs increase. Wisely, co-directors Don Hall and Stephen J. Anderson avoid the distraction of instantly recognizable actors in favor of animation veterans, like Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), who voices the resourceful Rabbit. While Sebastian Cabot narrated the Winnie featurettes of yore, comedian John Cleese, who sometimes speaks directly to Pooh, ably steps into his shoes, and talk-show host Craig Ferguson also makes a mark as the know-it-all Owl. At 68 minutes, not including short film "The Ballad of Nessie," this John Lasseter-produced feature should captivate most young viewers, even those accustomed to faster-paced, computer-animated features, like Lasseter's directorial efforts for Pixar. Musician M. Ward and singer/actress Zooey Deschanel of the band She & Him add to the old-fashioned charm with their retro-sounding songs. And be sure to stay through the closing credits for the funny surprise at the end.

Falling For Me by Anna David...Review & Giveaway!

I have just finished up a great read that I am so excited to tell you about today.  Falling for Me by Anna David just came out last week and is a peek into the authors mission to find and recreate herself.  Here is the scoop...

Like most women, whether they’ve chosen the Fortune 500 career path or have had five kids by 35, Anna David wondered if she’d made the right choices. Then she came upon the book Sex and the Single Girl by Helen Gurley Brown, Cosmopolitan’s fearless leader from the mid-sixties to the late nineties. Immediately connecting with Gurley Brown’s unique message of self-empowerment combined with femininity, Anna vowed to use Sex as a lesson plan, venturing out of her comfort zone in the hope of overcoming the fears and insecurities that had haunted her for years. Embarking on a journey both intensely personal and undeniably universal, she becomes adventurous and spontaneous—reviving her wardrobe and apartment, taking French lessons, dashing off to Seville, and whiling nights away with men she never would have considered before. In the process, she ends up meeting the person really worth changing for: herself.

Pipsqueak Boutique....Review!

Little R is going to be 2 next week...sniff, sniff!  It is so hard to believe my itty bitty baby is turning 2.  She is great mix of rough and tumble (she does have 2 older brothers!) and girliness.  One of her favorite things right now is princesses.  We are having a princess themed birthday party next week to celebrate.  I can't wait!  We have some adorable decorations and now, thanks to Pipsqueak Boutique, I have the perfect, princess shirt to put her in!

I was contacted by Pipsqueak boutique right in time for Little R's birthday to review either their personalized first birthday shirts or their birthday shirts for toddlers and I was so excited.  They have a great selection for boys and girls....owls, pirates, numbers, cupcakes, ice cream cones!  Whatever your child is into, Pipsqueak likely has a shirt for it!  When I saw the princess shirt I was thrilled.  Little R goes around talking about her princess party so I knew she would be thrilled with her very own princess shirt.

The shirt arrived and it is absolutely adorable.  It is a nice, soft, thick cotton (no flimsy t-shirt here!!)  and the quality is excellent after quite a few washings.  The style is perfect with a great fit and Little R loves it.  This is what she will be wearing at her birthday party next week...

I just love it and she is clearly thrilled with her shirt which I paired with a pink, princess tutu.  I love personalized shirts and Pipsqueak Boutique has a great selection, reasonable price and excellent quality.  You can't go wrong!  Now, I just have to wrap my head around my "baby" turning 2!!

*Disclosure:  I was provided with the above mentioned product for purpose of review.  The thoughts expressed are my own and may differ from yours.  No compensation was provided for my honest review.

Mohawk Home Rugs....Review & Giveaway

I have recently started to think more about my decorating style.  For the past (more than) 5 years it has been all about the kids.  We have been decorating with play pens, bouncy seats and ride on toys.  You know how it is!  Now the kids are getting a little older I am excited to move past the baby gear and give our home a face lift.  It is overwhelming though.

When I was given the opportunity to do a review with Mohawk Home I was so excited.  An area rug is really a quick way to spruce up your space and the rug in our living room was in dire need of replacement. Check it my "before" space complete with crazy children...

The only problem?  The vast selection of styles and choices!!  Mohawk Home has a staggering amount of rugs to choose from and it took me such a long time to make a choice...there were just so many great rugs that I had a hard time choosing.  So, this is not a problem at all!  No matter what you decorating style, Mohawk Home will have just what you are looking for.  I really love that rusty, orange color and I have a brown couch but I wanted to incorporate some more bold colors so, after much debating, I decided on the Tropical Acres Rug.  I love, love, love it!!!

Doesn't it look so much better??  I am thrilled with the quality.  It is plush and cozy and the kids can't stop rolling all over it....

The colors are nice and vibrant and I think the rug alone really transforms the space and it gives me lots of other color choice to incorporate into my decor.  I simply could not be happier.  Mohawk Home is the largest US manufacturer of area rugs, indoor and outdoor mats, and washable rugs.  The quality and value is spectacular and the selection can't be beat.

If you are on the market for an area rug or would simply like to update your space be sure to check out Mohawk Home.  I promise you won't be disappointed! Click HERE to start shopping at a local or online retailer.

Mohawk Home is giving one very lucky RBM reader a Mohawk rug of their choice up to size 5x8 up to $400 in value!!!!  Thank you so much to Mohawk Home and here is how to enter...

Raising Hope: The Complete First Season..Available Now!

On September 20th Raising Hope:  The Complete First Season was released!  Here is the scoop in case this show is new to you...

Life at the Chance’s will never be the same when Jimmy comes home with an unexpected gift. Follow
one ill-equipped family as they navigate through the pleasures and annoyances of raising a baby. The
Emmy Award® nominated** series, RAISING HOPE Season 1 comes to DVD on September 20th from
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment packed with exclusive featurettes, deleted and extended
scenes, a gag reel, commentaries and the un-aired pilot never shown on television.

Created by Emmy Award® winner Greg Garcia, Raising Hope stars Lucas Neff, Martha Plimpton, Garret
Dillahunt and Shannon Woodward. Cloris Leachman guest-stars as Maw Maw.
A one night stand becomes a life-long commitment when 23-year-old Jimmy Chance inadvertently impregnates a wanted felon and decides to raise Hope (aka Princess Beyonce) on his own. Jimmy, together with his family – his Maw Maw (Cloris Leachman), his mother Virginia (Martha Plimpton), and his father Burt (Garret Dillahunt) – face play dates, amusing family photo shoots, rock star dreams, vasectomies and much more in this uproariously irreverent, critically acclaimed first season of Raising Hope.

Have you seen this show yet?  This was my first time watching and it is a hoot.  It is definitely "quirky" and more than a little out there but that is what makes it stand out.  It has similar humor to My Name is Earl and it sort of reminded me a little of Roseanne's (which I still LOVE) humor as well.  I really like Martha Plimpton and I think she shines in this show.  If you are looking for something funny and out of the ordinary to watch pick up Raising Hope today.  It is on sale on Amazon right now for just $23.49 which is a savings of more than 40% so snatch it up today!

*Disclosure: I received the above mentioned DVD for purpose of review. I was not compensated for my review and the views expressed are my own.

Fathermucker: A Novel by Greg Olear....Review and Giveaway!

Oh how I love a smart, funny book that finds the humor in everyday life.  In the just released Fathermucker by Greg Olear I have found a book that is all of the above and then some.  This one had me laughing out loud, nodding my head in agreement and sometimes cringing in shared embarrassments.  This one had me at "Max and Ruby" (read it and you will know why!).  Here is the scoop...

Senior editor at the online literary magazine The Nervous Breakdown and author of Totally Killer, author Greg Olear brings us a not-so-typical day in the life of stay-at-home dad Josh Lansky, juggling myriad fatherly responsibilities while dealing with the maddening realization that his  away-on-business wife just might be having an affair. Fathermucker is a sweet, heartrending, often hilarious look at family life from the dad’s perspective that Nick Hornby fans will most certainly respond to. As Jessica Anne Blau, author of Drinking Closer to Home and The Summer of Naked Swim Parties so insightfully points out, “Only a writer with the verve, daring, and great talent of Greg Olear could pull off a novel that deals with sippy cups, masturbation, autism spectrum disorder, affairs, and play-dates all at once.”

Book Description
A day in the life of a dad on the brink: Josh Lansky—second-rate screenwriter, fledgling freelancer, and stay-at-home dad of two preschoolers—has held everything together while his wife is away on business . . . until this morning’s playdate, when he finds out through the mommy grapevine that she might be having an affair. What Josh needs is a break. He’s not going to get one.
