Scholastic Storybook Treasures...Review & Give Away!

For the past year or so, I have become a huge fan of Scholastic Storybook Treasure DVD's.  These DVD's take popular children's books and make them come to life onscreen in a way that stays 100% true to the book (a million thank you's for this Scholastic!).  These DVD's are ones that you can feel good about sharing with your children and ones you can enjoy watching with them.  We have several in our collection already and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review the two latest:  Children Make Terrible Pets & Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!  Both of these DVD's saved my sanity on a 3 1/2 hour road trip to Flagstaff Lake this past weekend (more on that later!).

Here is the scoop on these two wonderful DVD's put out by Scholastic and New Kideo...

Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late… and more stories by Mo Willems

DON’T LET THE PIGEON STAY UP LATE! (Featuring the voices of Mo Willems and John Scieszka) It’s getting dark out, but one stubborn Pigeon is NOT going to bed! Will you let him stay up late?
KNUFFLE BUNNY FREE: AN UNEXPECTED DIVERSION (Featuring the voices of Trixie, Cher and Mo Willems) Trixie and her family set off on a fantastic trip to visit her grandparents – in Holland! But it seems Knuffle Bunny has different plans.
EDWINA, THE DINOSAUR WHO DIDN’T KNOW SHE WAS EXTINCT (Featuring the voices of Cher and Mo Willems) Everyone loves Edwina, except the class know-it-all, who tries to convince everyone that dinosaurs are extinct.
All cartoons based on classic books by Mo Willems
Bonus Features
3 Stories on One DVD Plus: Interview with Mo Willems; Recipe for Edwina’s Chocolate Chip Cookies; Read-Along

Children Make Terrible Pets…and more stories about family

CHILDREN MAKE TERRIBLE PETS (Written and illustrated by Peter Brown, narrated by Emily Eiden) Lucy, a young bear, meets a charming little boy in the forest. When she brings him home, her mother cautions her “children make terrible pets.”

ALL THE WORLD (By Liz Garton Scanlon, illustrated by Marla Frazee, narrated by Joanne Woodward) This story follows a circle of family and friends over the course of a day and shows the importance of all things great and small in our world.

CROW CALL By Lois Lowry, illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline, narrated by Julia Fein) Liz and her father, who has been away at war for longer than she can remember, begin their journey to reconnect.

ELIZABETI’S DOLL (By Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen, illustrated by Christy Hale, narrated by Lynn Whitfield) When her new baby brother arrives, Elizabeti, a young Tanzanian girl, longs to care for something of her own.
Bonus Features
Interview with Children Make Terrible Pets Author/Illustrator Peter Brown; Interview with All The World Illustrator Marla Frazee; Interview with Crow Call Author Lois Lowry; Read-Along.

As I mentioned, we took these two DVD collections with us on a very long drive and I am SO glad we did.  My children do not love to sit still and being in the car for such a long stretch can be AWFUL.  However, these two DVD's kept everyone engaged and giggling....even when we watched them twice in a row!!  Some of the stories were familiar to our family like the title stories of each and Knuffle Bunny but it was so much fun for my children to see them come to life.  Additionally, with the read along feature I felt it was a nice teaching tool for my early readers!

A few of the stories included on the DVD's were new to us but quickly become beloved especially the charming Elizabeti's Doll.  This one would make the ideal story for a child with a new sibling or one on the way.  It is simply wonderful (as were all the stories on the DVD's quite frankly!)

I can't say enough about the entire Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD's.  These are absolute favorites of our and Children Make Terrible Pets and Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late are fantastic additions to this great series.  If you are looking for something special or a thoughtful gift a Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD is the way to go!
