My Name is Handel...Review & Giveaway!
Earlier in the week a wonderful CD was released and I am so excited to tell you about it. My Name is Handel by Maestro Classics is one for the whole family! Maestro Classics produces Stories for Children which is an award winning (45 and counting!) series featuring well loved stories and classical music. I just think this concept if so fun and innovative and a great way to get children involved in classical pieces. Here is the scoop...
My Name is Handel transports listeners to early 18th century London, where George Frideric Handel, the brilliant young German composer, has established residence. Handel’s erstwhile employer, the Elector of Hanover, has just succeeded to the throne of England to become King George I. As a true showman’s response to the announcement of a royal boat trip on the River Thames, Handel composes a suite of dances, hires a boat and 50 musicians, and heads down the river to surprise the King. The music Handel wrote for this occasion has become known as "Water Music," one of the composer’s best-loved works. The story of this tuneful adventure serves as the engaging backdrop for a multifaceted exploration of Handel’s career and a musical response to the question, “How did a German become England’s most famous composer?” With eminent conductor Stephen Simon directing the London Philharmonic Orchestra, renowned Baroque soprano Julianne Baird and baritone James Shaffran, narration by Yadu (a.k.a. Dr. Konrad Czynski), and intriguing observations by Maestro Classics co-founder Bonnie Ward Simon, My Name is Handel is much more than your typical “classical music for kids” CD.
Wow...I can't say enough about this CD. The recommended age for this series is 5-12 but my not quite 5 year olds really enjoy it and so do I. I would say people from all ages will enjoy this one. I really want the kids to have a broad range of musical likes. I like to expose them to all types and I love watching them find appreciation for a variety of musical works. I think knowing the story behind the music makes this series a showstopper. My Name is Handel is interesting, educational, fun and to sum it up? Educational music to my ears! I'd want Peter and the Wolf - no question! I remember a music teacher playing it for us and narrating the story when I was in first grade and loved every minute of it. I'd like to share that with my kids.
