Smoke by Catherine McKenzie....Review and Giveaway!!
Here is the scoop on Smoke...
From the internationally bestselling author Catherine McKenzie comes an evocative tale of two women navigating the secrets and lies at the heart of a wildfire threatening their town.
After a decade long career combating wildfires, Elizabeth has traded in her former life for a quieter one with her husband. Now she works as the local arson investigator in a beautiful, quaint town in the Rockies. But that tranquil life vanishes when she and her husband agree to divorce and a fire in nearby Cooper Basin begins to spread rapidly. For Elizabeth, containing a raging wildfire is easier than accepting that her marriage has failed.
For Elizabeth’s ex-friend Mindy, who feels disconnected from her husband and teenage children, the fire represents a chance to find a new purpose: helping a man who has lost his home to the blaze. But her faith is shattered by a shocking accusation.
As the encroaching inferno threatens the town’s residents, Elizabeth and Mindy must discover what will be lost in the fire, and what will be saved.
My Thoughts: Once again Catherine MacKenzie has created characters who are just like people I know and can absolutely relate to. In fact, among being a great storyteller, I think McKenzie's biggest strength is creating characters the reader can understand and empathize with. I have found that to be true in her other books and it is certainly the case in Smoke.
Although both Elizabeth and Mindy are very different I could absolutely find traits about them I could relate and respond to. My heart broke for Elizabeth as she deals with the fact that her marriage is failing and that she has not been able to have a baby despite adopting a more laid back lifestyle than she was previously facing. I could actually FEEL her disappointment through the pages. On the flipside, Mindy is one of those women who is supermom and super-wife and does it all on the outside. On the inside, she is not holding it together as it appears. Exploring the (past) friendship between the two is an interesting study in what we do for friends and what makes (or breaks) a friendship.
Coupled with the personal stories is the raging mystery of who is responsible for the fire. McKenzie creates a cast of characters who keep you guessing and intricately weaves a tale that will keep you turning pages long after you should have gone to sleep. Or done dishes. Or done some work. Trust me...I know (and I don't care because the book was so good it was worth putting everything on hold!). Treat yourself to a riveting book today....
