Start Without Me by Joshua Max Feldman...Review & Giveaway!

I binged a great book earlier this month and  I am excited to share it with you today.  Start Without Me by Joshua Max Feldman is a witty read that you definitely won't want to put down!  Here is the scoop...

The author of the critically acclaimed The Book of Jonah explores questions of love and choice, disappointment and hope in the lives of two strangers who meet by chance in this mesmerizing tale that unfolds over one Thanksgiving Day.
Adam is a former musician and recovering alcoholic who is home for Thanksgiving for the first time in many years. Surrounded by his parents and siblings, nieces and nephews—all who have seen him at his worst—he can’t shake the feeling that no matter how hard he tries, he’ll always be the one who can’t get it right.
Marissa is a flight attendant whose marriage is strained by simmering tensions over race, class, and ambition. Heading to her in-laws for their picture-perfect holiday family dinner, her anxiety is intensified by the knowledge she is pregnant from an impulsive one-night-stand.
In an airport restaurant on Thanksgiving morning, Adam and Marissa meet. Over the course of this day fraught with emotion and expectation, these two strangers will form an unlikely bond as they reckon with their family ties, their pasts, and the choices that will determine their way forward.
Joshua Max Feldman focuses his knowing eye on one of the last bastions of classical American idealism, the Thanksgiving family gathering, as he explores our struggles to know—and to be—our best selves. Hilarious and heartrending, Start Without Me is a thoughtful and entertaining page-turner that will leave its indelible mark on your heart.

My Thoughts:  I loved this book.  You wouldn't think that there would be enough in one single day to fill up 300 pages without it being dragged out but Feldman does a remarkable job of making this day one to remember.  The chance meeting of Adam and Marissa is sweet and quirky and endearing.  Both characters have flaws (like all people!) but this drew me right in.  Their unlikely and quick connection left me unable to put the book down because I wanted to see how the day (and life!) would turn out for these two  allies.  At the center of the story for both characters is the importance of family.  How they shape you, how you fit into the dynamic (or don't) and the lengths you will go to for the ones you love.  Feldman is very dry and funny and while the story is sometimes sad, I often found myself laughing out loud.
I would definitely recommend this book and I have already put his first novel "The Book of Jonah" on my to-read list!  Pick up your copy of Start Without Me today at the local bookstore or by clicking below to Amazon...

I don’t belong to a book club...maybe someday. I do love to read on my own though and I read tons of chapter books aloud to my kids which is reminiscent of a book club. Haha!

I do not belong to a book club. I've always thought it would be fun though. I may look into that. I will add that I have seen a movie that is either this book made into movie or similar to this book. But the book is always better. And the movie was funny.
